The Arizona Cardinals have fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and promoted quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich to the job, the team announced on their official website.

This move comes shortly after the Cardinals’ disastrous 45-10 defeat to the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football which left them at 1-6 on the season.

Cardinals coach Steve Wilks said post-game that it was “premature” to discuss potential changes to the coaching staff. But clearly, the team had reached its tipping point with McCoy.

The Cardinals offense has been a complete disaster this season under McCoy, averaging only 13.1 points a game – 31st in the league. They are also last in the league in total yards a game, third-down conversion percentage, time of possession and rushing yards.

With that sort of production, it seemed like just a matter of time before they made a change.

Enter Leftwich, a former NFL quarterback who played nine seasons in the league, primarily with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers. He was brought in by former coach Bruce Arians as an intern in 2016 and was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2017.

Leftwich has no prior experience calling plays in regular-season NFL games, although he was allowed to be the play-caller in some preseason games last year.

Leftwich will have his work cut out for him in terms of turning this Cardinals offense around. His main points of emphasis will likely be overseeing rookie quarterback Josh Rosen’s development, as well as reinvigorating running back David Johnson, who’s had an underwhelming season thus far.
