Jayson Tatum has solidified his place in Boston Celtics history with another fantastic performance on Friday night. The former Duke star dropped 60 points for the C's in an unthinkable 32-point comeback against the Spurs, which ended in a tight 143-140 win for the team.
In the process, Tatum became the first player ever in the history of the organization to drop 50 or more points on two occasions in a single season. It's a feat not even the great Bill Russell and Larry Bird pulled off, per ESPN Stats & Info:
In case you forgot, the Celtics All-Star also erupted for 53 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 9th, while also going 6 for 10 from three-point range.
In Friday's win, Tatum was in his bag. Boston was in absolute shambles to begin the game and he was basically the only player draining buckets in the opening quarter. Along with 60 points, Tatum also grabbed eight boards and dished out five assists in the overtime victory.
It's been an uphill battle for the Celtics this season as they've had a very tough time having their core four of Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, and Kemba Walker all healthy at the same time.
Despite the dreadful start on Friday, it ultimately ended on a positive note to keep Brad Stevens' team in sixth place in the East with a 33-30 record. The Celtics have also gone 6-4 in their last 10 contests.
Tatum will be looking to put forward some more electrifying performances as the Celtics aim for a strong finish to the campaign ahead of the playoffs. And in just year 4, he's already breaking records.
