The Boston Celtics are arguably the deepest team in the entire NBA. Thanks to a myriad of solid draft picks, savvy free agent signings, and a little luck of the Irish in recent years, they have at least nine players who can play heavy minutes every single game.

This abundance of riches, however beneficial, can also be quite a challenging, especially with so many mouths to feed. It now leads us to ask this very crucial question – Can the team fully maximize their asset, particularly the three-headed monster on the wings?

Initially, my answer would be yes. The Celtics are a top-notch organization with a solid winning culture and brilliant coaching staff, led by head coach Brad Stevens and general manager Danny Ainge. If there was ever a franchise that could pull this off, my money would be on the white and green.

However, before we can arrive at that conclusion, let's dive into the nitty-gritty details by first examining what transpired last season.

After a devastating knee and ankle injury that sidelined Gordon Hayward for the entire year, the Celtics were forced to lean on then second-year forward Jaylen Brown and prized rookie Jayson Tatum. Thankfully, the duo blossomed into formidable two-way players and helped lead Boston to a winning season.

For the 2017-2018 campaign, Brown doubled up on his averages the season before with 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.0 steal, and 1.7 threes per game. On the other hand, despite not being considered as an early favorite to win Rookie of the Year, Tatum proved his naysayers wrong by pumping in 13.9 points and 1.3 threes on 47.5 percent shooting, to go along with 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.0 steal of his own on a nightly basis.

Their strong performance, coupled with the invaluable experience they gained, will undoubtedly push Stevens to play his youngsters more in the upcoming season. But with Hayward due back and raring to re-claim his alpha dog status as starting wing, will there be enough opportunities to go around?

Well, one thing that will certainly work to their advantages is the three Celtics’ ability to play multiple positions. Each one has the strength, speed, and shooting to effectively fill in the shooting guard, small forward, and even power forward roles, especially in small-ball lineups. The fact that they’re not restricted to a singular functions means there will be plenty of minutes to go around. They can even sub-in and out for each other, ensuring that they are well rested throughout the game, and giving Boston the luxury to tweak their lineup according to need.

Additionally, the trio of Hayward, Brown, and Tatum are all high IQ basketball players. Not only are they offensively skilled, but they’re also willing passers who play the game the right way. Most importantly, they possess the aptitude to switch off defensively and guard virtually any player, one through four, on the opposition. This flexibility is a key component that will help Boston match up with the perennial contenders in the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors.

The NBA has largely adapted the positionless basketball philosophy where players are widely expected to do almost everything on a basketball court. Scoring, shooting, playmaking, and defensive expertise are all skills sought after in a prototypical modern baller. Having multiple personalities on your team with these talents is an instant recipe for success.

Hayward, Brown, and Tatum all fit this mold, are interchangeable pieces, and possess an arsenal of dexterities matched by few players. It’s only really a matter of time before these players find their stride, build a strong chemistry, and continue their ascent to the top of the league. Best of all, they are all team-first individuals who value winning a championship more than personal accolades. At the end of the day, having this as your backbone guarantees that no matter the challenge, they’ll always choose the greater good.

Given these circumstances, we can easily come to the conclusion that Boston will not only find great achievements with their own version of the death lineup but also maximize the abilities and talents of their personnel.

Don’t be surprised if each one of them has dominating runs throughout the season because they’re built to do just that.
