The English representatives, Liverpool, will be hosting the Spanish club Villarreal in their iconic Anfield Stadium this coming Wednesday. With that said, it’s a good time to check out our Champions League odds series, which includes our Liverpool-Villarreal prediction and pick we have laid out below.

Liverpool is entering this match on a real hot streak. The last time the Reds lost a game was 28th December of last year. Unfortunately for them, they effectively only have the Champions League to fight for, as the destiny of the Premier League is in Manchester City's hands. Villarreal also has only the Champions League to fight for, but due to different reasons. They are 7th in Spain's La Liga, three points behind 6th place and the European Conference League, but with a Champions League semifinal coming to their small town, no one is following the La Liga proceedings as of right now.

Why Liverpool Could Win This Match

Liverpool is a true powerhouse of European football and in the form they are in, this should be the easiest semifinal they ever played in Champions League history. Obviously, when it comes to the semifinals of the Champions League, there are no easy opponents, but Liverpool is miles ahead of the quality of Villarreal. There were shaky moments in their Champions League campaign, most notably scraping through the first round versus Inter Milan, but they have been playing incredibly since the calendar turned to 2022.

As said in the beginning, Liverpool has not lost a game in the league since the 28th of December, when they visited Leicester City and lost 1-0. In the Champions League, they lost to Inter Milan on the 8th of March, but it was enough to go through since they won the first leg 2-0 away in Italy. In the Champions League this season, they have that singular defeat and one draw, 3-3 with Benfica in a seemingly meaningless game, since the first one ended 3-1 Liverpool's way.

These numbers are phenomenal and Liverpool fans will be flocking to Anfield to see another world-class performance. Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Sadio Mane are all playing exceptionally at the moment and there are some serious questions about whether any team in the world can contain them. The consensus opinion is that Villarreal cannot, so it should be a fairly simple win for the Reds.

Why Villarreal Could Win This Match

Then again, the consensus opinion before both the first and the second leg of Villarreal's quarterfinals tie versus Bayern Munich is that the Bavarians would smash them. Yet, this stubborn Spanish club, led by Arsenal-reject Unai Emery from the bench, just does not roll over for anyone. They beat Bayern at home and probably should have scored a few more, then went to the Allianz Arena and stole progression in the dying minutes of the game. In La Liga, they did not let champions-elect Real Madrid destroy them too, getting out two draws versus the Spanish giants.

The point of this is that Villarreal is relentless and they do not give up, under any circumstance. Despite falling down 1-0 to a Robert Lewandowski goal in the 52nd minute, they kept playing their game and the Yellow Submarine was rewarded by a Samuel Chukwueze goal in the 88th minute to seal their meeting with Liverpool in the semis. Interestingly enough, it is their second Champions League semifinal, with the first one being in 2006, when they were eliminated by Arsenal.

It is not all about the intangibles, like their spirit and resilience. Villarreal has some real quality and their biggest quality is incredible midfield stability. They have so many options, including Dani Parejo, Vincent Iborra, Francis Coquelin, Manu Trigueros, Giovani Lo Celso, and many others. Villarreal can play a myriad of different ways and then look to supply Arnaut Danjuma on the left-wing and Gerard Moreno in the center. These guys have been underestimated before and it did not come to fruition, so Villarreal is coming to the Anfield to play.
