DeAndre Washington was considering all of his options in free agency before choosing the Kansas City Chiefs. Prior to making his decision, Washington shared that Patrick Mahomes offered him some “insight” in what to do in free agency.

“When I was getting down to the nitty-gritty, I called him and just kind of got some insight, a perspective on what he enjoyed the most from some things outside of football that we talked about,” Washington said, via Herbie Teope of the Kansas City Star. “Once I told him I was interested, he was definitely on board and trying to get me in. . . . We had a few conversations prior to it getting made. And that probably made me feel a lot more comfortable about making that decision.”

Of course, Washington and Mahomes were college teammates at Texas Tech. Even though they spent just two years together at Texas Tech, both of them maintain a relationship off of the field.

Washington was drafted in the 2016 NFL Draft by the now–Las Vegas Raiders in the fifth round. On the other hand, Mahomes was selected a year after Washington by the Chiefs with the No. 10 pick.

Last season, Kansas City deployed a backfield that featured Damien Williams and LeSean McCoy. While Williams helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl, Kansas City had the 23rd ranked rushing attack in 2019.

For Washington, he gives the Chiefs another running back that thrives as a pass-catcher, hauling in 36 receptions with the Raiders last season. Despite being the quarterback, Mahomes also has the power to convince the Chiefs to sign certain players in free agency.
