Chiefs storylines

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes with receivers Kadarius Toney and Justyn Ross

The Chiefs that beat the Bills in the playoffs in two of the last three years were a scary team and a team that most would argue was by far the best team in the league. The Chiefs offense has been unstoppable in recent years, and it has led to five straight appearances in the AFC Championship game. Kansas City has not looked quite as dominant on the offensive end this season, though. Still, they were good enough that they were able to secure the three-seed in the AFC.

Drops have been the Chiefs' biggest issue this season. Patrick Mahomes – the best quarterback in the NFL – has always had plenty of help, but Tyreek Hill plays for the Dolphins now, and Travis Kelce has had a down year. Mahomes' receivers have a league-high 44 drops this season, which has contributed to the team not driving the ball down the field as effectively as usual.

The Chiefs' defense has stepped it up a level this year, though, and it has led to Kansas City still being one of the best teams in the NFL. Chris Jones leads the way on this front, and if the Chiefs' offense can get to their normal standards, then Kansas City will be a threat unlike any other in the league. It seems like only a matter of time until the Chiefs figure things out on offense. They scored 26 points despite playing in the cold last week, and Rashee Rice is improving every week.

Bills storylines

Josh Allen prepares for an intense matchup against Patrick Mahomes, as the Bills advance to the second round for the Chiefs' game.

The Bills started the season off 6-6 and were in danger of missing the playoffs, but they have been one of the hottest teams in the league ever since. Buffalo has won six straight games since their bye week, including last week's Wild Card victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

For years, Buffalo has been a Super Bowl contender, but the Chiefs have always been a team that has stopped them from reaching that point. The Chiefs sent the Bills home in the playoffs in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, with the most recent game being one of the most heartbreaking losses ever. In the most recent loss, the Bills were up with only 13 seconds to play, but the Chiefs quickly drove down the field and tied the game up before winning in overtime.

The recent losses to the Chiefs mean that Kansas City knows how to beat Buffalo, but it also means the Bills will be motivated. The Bills lost four straight Super Bowls in the '90s, and three playoff losses in four years to the Chiefs would be reminiscent of that for the Bills.

Luckily, Buffalo has tons of talent, and no one would be surprised if this is the year they finally get by Kansas City. Josh Allen looked unstoppable last week, and he is clearly one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Allen had four total touchdowns in the 31-17 victory. His star receiver, Stefon Diggs, still hasn't been able to get in the end zone, though. Diggs has not had a touchdown catch since Week 12, and he hasn't surpassed 100 yards since Week 6. The team's running game has improved over that time, though. James Cook has established himself as a consistent and valuable option out of the backfield.

Both the Chiefs and the Bills are coming off of games that were played in extreme weather. It is hard to pass the ball in the cold, so if the weather permits, both of these teams will surely want to air out the ball more than they were able to in the Wild Card Round. Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes have an epic rivalry, as they are clearly two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. This game is truly a legacy game, as a Chiefs win would settle any debate on who is the better team in this rivalry, but a Bills win would further the rivalry and establish Mahomes vs. Allen as one of the most important parts of this era of NFL football.
