Substance over style. This is what Chinanu Onuaku holds close to himself.
The Houston Rockets rookie made news lately due to his very eccentric manner of shooting free throws, as everyone witnessed in his team’s recent preseason game in China.
Onuaku has been using what’s popularly known as the “granny style” method of shooting since his college days at Louisville, and it has helped him increase his free throw percentage by a considerable number.
Speaking to ESPN’s Calvin Watkins, the 6-foot-10 big man made a strong statement regarding his style.
“When I went to Greece I had a bunch of buzz about it. Then I knew I’d get some buzz about it (in China) because everybody has been talking about it lately. Nobody has been man enough to do it.”
The two more popular NBA players who shot underhand free throws were Hall of Famers Wilt Chamberlain and Rick Barry. It hasn’t been used for a long time, but fans, especially those in Houston, will now get to see this more often.
