Veteran starting pitcher Cole Hamels is in the twilight of his career, but he is coming off a pair of quality seasons and still feels that he has something to add to a contender.

The Philadelphia Phillies are in desperate need of starting pitching after watching their youngsters flop for the second year in a row. And–if they miss out on Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg–Philadelphia would prefer to add effective starters on short-term deals.

Could this make for a potential reunion between the two sides? Hamels–who spent nine-plus years with the Phillies at the start if his career–is open to that option (via Todd Zolecki of MLB.com):

“I know Philly is finally trying to make that push,” Cole Hamels told MLB.com this week. “They’re building their roster. If I fit on their roster and their plans, I’d love the opportunity to come back. It’s probably more on their end, though, to reach out and see if I actually do fit in their plans. It would be difficult for me to say, ‘Hey, I want to play there, can you guys make it happen?’ But I’m always willing to play for that team and city and attempt to win a World Series. That’s where I am right now. I just want to have the opportunity to get to the postseason, just so that I can try to win.”

Phillies starters ranked 23rd in baseball in terms of fWAR, last season, and nearly everyone on their staff (including Aaron Nola) experienced regression.

Hamels revitalized his career upon a deadline move to Chicago in July of 2018. Despite struggling to recover from an oblique strain this past July, he would be an immediate upgrade should the Phillies convince him to return home.
