The Indianapolis Colts have been searching for a veteran quarterback to be their primary backup behind new starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Following Andrew Luck's decision to retire, the team knew that they needed to bring in another arm that they can rely on if anything happens to Brissett.

Thankfully, Chris Ballard and company were able to get their man, signing former New England Patriots backup quarterback Brian Hoyer to a three-year contract worth $12 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Hoyer has been a consistent presence in New England over the last few years. Tom Brady never went down during that time span, but Bill Belichick and company were comfortable with Hoyer taking over if he did.

Prior to this move, the Colts had just one active quarterback on their roster for the first two weeks of the season. Chad Kelly made the 53-man roster after an impressive preseason showing, but is suspended for the first two games of the regular season. If Brissett had gone down, the Colts had no one to take over for him.

Throughout the 65 games that Hoyer has played in the NFL, he has completed 59.3 percent of his pass attempts for 9,902 yards, 48 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions. They aren't the most impressive numbers, but they aren't terrible for a backup quarterback that hopefully won't have to play.

All of that being said, the Colts are set to open up a new era of football this week against the Los Angeles Chargers. Hoyer likely won't see action this season unless Brissett suffers an injury, but it's a quality pickup at a reasonable price.
