The Dallas Cowboys are America's team and they have had plenty of good draft picks in their history. A lot of the best players in the team's history were drafted, and some spent their entire career with the team. Let's break down the five best draft picks in Cowboys history.

5. Tony Dorsett, 1977, Round 1, Pick 2

Tony Dorsett was selected second overall in the 1977 draft, and he lived up to the expectations that come with being selected that high. After winning the Heisman Trophy in college, he took his success into the NFL and he did enough to end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Dorsett played 11 seasons with the Cowboys and he finished with over 1,000 yards in eight of those seasons. In 1981 he only found the end zone four times on the ground. but he did put up 1,646 yards.

4. Michael Irvin, 1988, Round 1, Pick 11

Michael Irvin was a key piece to a Cowboys team that found a lot of success during the 1990's. Irvin's best year was in 1995 when he hauled in 111 passes for 1603 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Irvin finished his career second on the Cowboys all-time receiving list hauling in 11,904 yards. He was named to the 1990's All-Decade team for his efforts. He was also a three-time Super Bowl champion, five time Pro-Bowler, and was named to the All-Pro first team once.

3. Troy Aikman, 1989, Round 1, Pick 1

A year after drafting Michael Irvin with the 11th pick, the Cowboys selected Troy Aikman with the first overall pick in the 1989 draft, and he was a star.

Aikman dealt with concussions during his career, but he is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. As a rookie, Aikman lost all 11 of his starts, and the next year there were also struggles, but everything changed in 1992. The Cowboys went 13-3 and he threw for 3,445 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Aikman was named to six Pro Bowls and was the Walter Peyton Man of the Year in 1997. He was a three-time Super Bowl Champion and was named MVP following Super Bowl XXVIII. Aikman's bust sits in Canton, Ohio in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

2. Emmitt Smith, 1990, Round 1, Pick 17

A trend with the Cowboys' best draft picks is that they had a lot of success hitting on their first-round picks. The Cowboys' first-round picks from 1988 through 1990 might be the best three-year run by any team in NFL history. The Cowboys drafted Emmitt Smith 17th overall in the 1990 draft after a standout career with the Florida Gators.

Smith was the NFL MVP in 1993 and he finished his career rushing for 18,355 yards and 164 touchdowns.

1. Roger Staubach, 1964, Round 10, Pick 129,

Roger Staubach was the first great player for the Cowboys getting drafted all the way back in 1964 and he is still the best player in franchise history.

Staubach led the Cowboys to a couple of Super Bowl victories and was named the MVP of Super Bowl VI. Staubach finished his career passing for 22,700 yards and 153 passing yards.

A lot might argue that Aikman meant more to the Cowboys history. But Staubach was the first big superstar and didn't have as many weapons around him.
