The Dallas Cowboys have yet to reach a long-term agreement with Dak Prescott, which is why their decision to sign veteran quarterback Andy Dalton earlier this week certainly raised some eyebrows.

But while Dalton still views himself as a starter in the NFL, he isn't trying to take Prescott's job:

“Dak has played really well and I knew the situation coming in,” said Dalton, according to Brianna Dix of D210 Sports. “Dak’s the starter on this team.”

Prescott is coming off of a terrific 2019 campaign in which he threw for 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 65.1 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 99.7.

Meanwhile, Dalton struggled mightily in what ended up being his final season with the Cincinnati Bengals, tossing 16 touchdowns and 14 picks while briefly losing his job to Ryan Finley.

Not long after taking LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick late last month, the Bengals released Dalton, ending his nine-year run in Cincinnati. Over that time, Dalton made three Pro Bowl appearances and was consistently solid, but he was never good enough to lead the Bengals past the AFC Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

On the bright side for Dalton, he is still just 32 years old, so he probably has some decent football left in the tank. However, if he does start another game in the NFL, it almost certainly won't be in 2020. That is, of course, unless something goes terribly wrong in the negotiations between Prescott and the Cowboys in the coming weeks and months.
