The Chicago Cubs and outfielder Nicholas Castellanos have mutual interest in a new deal, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.

Bastian notes that Castellanos enjoyed being a part of the playoff chase with the Cubs this past season and that he would like to experience that again going forward.

Chicago acquired Castellanos in a deadline trade with the Detroit Tigers.

In 51 games with the Cubs, he slashed .321/.356/.646 with 16 home runs, 21 doubles and 36 RBI over 225 plate appearances. On the season overall, he slashed .289/.337/.525 with 27 long balls, 58 doubles and 73 RBI.

The 27-year-old was originally selected by the Tigers in the first round (44th pick overall) of the 2010 MLB Draft.

He eventually made his big-league debut in 2013, logging five hits in 18 trips to the dish. The following year, Castellanos became a full-time player for Detroit, slashing .259/.306/.394 with 11 dingers and 66 RBI across 579 plate appearances.

He went on to post very similar numbers in 2015, registering a slash line of .255/.303/.419 with 15 homers and 73 RBI through 595 trips to the dish. Finally, in 2016, Castellanos broke out, slashing .285/.331/.496 with 18 home runs and 58 RBI, and the next season, he slashed .272/.320/.390 with 26 long balls, 10 triples and 101 RBI.

Castellanos has been a consistently strong hitter ever since and owns a career slash line of .277/.326/.471. He has posted OPSes of over .800 in each of the last three seasons.

The Cubs won 84 games in 2019, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014 and resulting in the club parting ways with manager Joe Maddon, who led Chicago to its first World Series title since 1908 in 2016.
