Anything can happen in baseball. Chicago Cubs shortstop Nico Hoerner showed on Opening Day just how unpredictable the sport can be as he faced Corbin Burnes of the Milwaukee Brewers.

In the midst of a tough fight with the team favored to win their division, Hoerner stepped up to bat. He was facing Burnes, the National League's Cy Young Award winner last season. Hoerner had played 99 consecutive games across the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons without hitting a home run. With one out and Jason Heyward on first base, he was looking to break the game's 1-1 tie. He did.

On a 1-1 count, Hoerner broke his cold streak and went yard to left field, putting the Cubs on top.

Hoerner is anything but a power hitter. In 44 games last season, he posted a batting average of .302 and an on-base percentage of .382 last season, both of which are very good. But his slugging percentage was just .369 with only 10 extra-base hits, all of which were doubles. Going yard against a pitcher coming off a season in which he led the majors with only 0.4 home runs allowed per nine innings is wild and hilarious.

Burnes gave an omen of bad things to come when he walked his first batter of the same after setting an MLB record with 58 strikeouts before issuing his first base on balls last season. The Brewers' ace struck out four batters while allowing four hits, three walks and three earned runs against the Cubs in 5.0 innings.

The season is along, though, and Burnes should be able to bounce back from his rough Opening Day start. But Hoerner's homer will not be forgotten soon by Chicago fans.
