After only one season with the Duke Blue Devils, Lively decided to forego his remaining years of college eligibility by officially declaring for the 2023 NBA Draft. On draft night, Oklahoma City Thunder selected the former Duke  center in the first round with the 12th overall pick but never played for the team.

Shortly after the draft, the Thunder traded Lively to the Dallas Mavericks in return for Davis Bertans and Cason Wallace. Lively eventually signed with the Dallas Mavericks on a four-year rookie deal worth $22.3 million.

In his rookie season, Lively put up 8.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game while making 75 percent of his shots from the field overall. With Lively making a positive impact for the Mavericks, the 7-foot-1 center was named to the All-Rookie Second Team.
