The Los Angeles Dodgers are taking on the New York Yankees in an epic weekend rivalry series and if your last name is Hernandez, you're probably having a pretty good time.

In Saturday's game Dodgers players Teoscar Hernandez and Kike Hernandez became the first teammates in history with that last name to hit home runs in the same game in MLB history, per OptaSTATS:

In the top of the second inning, Teoscar Hernandez hit a 416-foot bomb to center field on the first pitch he saw from Yankees hurler Nestor Cortes.

Then, in the top of the fifth inning with the game tied at two, Kike Hernandez hit one over the famous right field fence at Yankee Stadium to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead.

To top things off, Teoscar wasn't done dealing damage. In the top of the eighth inning, he hit a 424-foot grand slam to dead center field – giving him six RBIs on the night in the Dodgers' win over New York.

Dodgers fans took over Yankee Stadium on Saturday

Dodgers fans impressively filled East 161st Street on their way into Yankee Stadium, determined to significantly diminish the Yankees' usually overwhelming home-field advantage (21-9 record in 2024).

The electricity for this interleague showdown is palpable, which just goes to show that it doesn't need to be October for a Dodgers-Yankees matchup to be big news. Of course, it definitely helps that both teams are among the top-five in terms of record and championship expectations.

This rivalry, which has historically been dominated by the Yankees, has produced some of the greatest moments in MLB history. The two franchises are certainly capable of doing the same again in 2024. Should they both continue to play as well as they have through the first third-plus of this season, there's a decent chance that baseball fans will be treated to yet another Yankees vs. Dodger World Series.

The two teams have met 11 times in World Series history – with the Dodgers losing eight of those series – but haven't faced off since Los Angeles' series win in 1981. The Dodgers also swept the Yankees in the 1963 World Series and, famously, beat New York in 1955 in seven games.

The Yankees also owned the better record in regular season interleague play until Saturday night. New York was 10-9 entering the game, but the Dodgers have now evened their interleague record with New York at 10 wins apiece, thanks to Teoscar and Kike Hernandez's output.
