Star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins are currently in the midst of what figures to be a highly important offseason as for the future direction of the franchise following what was an up and down 2023-24 NFL season. The Dolphins got out to a red hot start last year and Tagovailoa helped author what became one of the most dominant offensive stretches in league history; however, Miami once again flamed out down the stretch and ultimately fell to the Kansas City Chiefs–the eventual Super Bowl champions–in the Wild Card round of the NFC playoffs.
One of the biggest storylines pertaining to the offseason for the Dolphins is a possible contract extension for Tagovailoa, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract and would obviously like some stability moving forward long term with the franchise.
Recently, Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill dropped a blunt take on his quarterback's contract negotiations.
“Tua should’ve been paid,” said Hill, per Cameron Wolfe of the NFL Network on X, the social media platform formerly referred to as Twitter.
Hill also used an interesting analogy to address the situation.
“I feel like at the end of the day, if you feel like you're top five at something, that's like if you work at Amazon. If you're one of the best Amazon delivery drivers, you're going to feel a certain type of way. You're going to go to your boss and say ‘hey, bruh. I'm doing a hundred routes. This person's only doing 65 routes. I'm supposed to be the top paid person, you feel me?”
While Tagovailoa isn't a top five quarterback as Hill insinuated, it will still be refreshing for Dolphins fans to see that he seems to be levelheaded about the situation.
“The market is the market. If we didn't have a market, none of that would matter. That's what I would say. The market is the market,” said Tagovailoa, per Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team on X.
Recently, that market was kickstarted by a new extension signed by Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, netting the former Los Angeles Ram $53 million per year.
What is the Dolphins' ceiling?

The Dolphins have shown consistent flashes of greatness over the last couple of years but have yet to put it all together, exiting in the first round of the playoffs in both seasons.
Tagovailoa when he's at his best is one of the most electrifying players in the league, and thankfully, the concussion scares that more or less ended his season in 2022 did not show up in 2023-24.
Hill, meanwhile, continues to produce at a historic rate and is inarguably one of the three best receivers in the game today. If the Dolphins can find a way to produce more consistently on the defensive end of the field, as well as in weather that isn't always nice and sunny as it is in South Florida, the team could become a real threat in the AFC moving forward.
The NFL season gets underway in September.
