Duke basketball coach Jon Scheyer is praising his team's toughness following the school's victory over Notre Dame. Duke defeated the Fighting Irish 67-59 on Saturday.

“I thought we showed amazing toughness. The way we closed the first half, I think it was 14-3, that's huge if you can end a half that way when you don't play your best,” Scheyer said, per a release from the school.

“And then the job that Mark Mitchell did – let me just tell you how proud I am of him. He's been working his butt off, consistently, he's been really decisive. Playing more confidently.”

Duke got great production from Mitchell. Mitchell finished the game with a double-double, grabbing 14 rebounds to go with the team-leading 23 points he scored. Duke basketball is now 11-3 on the season. Jeremy Roach poured in 18 points for the Blue Devils to help in the team's victory. Roach also had praise for Mitchell's performance.

“I mean, Mark is just a guy that's going to find it. He's going to find his openings,” Roach said, per the school. “He was getting offensive rebounds, he was hitting some three's. He is doing a little bit of everything.”

Duke and coach Jon Scheyer are trying to find their way this season, before the school gets one of the best recruiting classes in program history in 2024-5, with no.1 recruit Cooper Flagg and company coming to campus. Duke is currently in second place in the ACC, with a 2-1 conference record. Scheyer now has 38 victories in his first 50 games as head coach, the first time that's happened in the history of Duke basketball.

Notre Dame falls to 6-9 on the season with the loss, including a 1-3 mark in the ACC. Duke next plays at Pittsburgh on Tuesday Jan. 9. The game tips off at 9:00 Eastern.
