The Philadelphia Eagles selected University of Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts with the 53rd overall pick of the NFL Draft on Friday night, effectively ending any chance of Hurts becoming a Lamar Jackson-type during his rookie campaign in 2020.

However, that doesn't mean the Eagles don't see any use for Hurts right off the bat.

When asked about the incoming signal-caller, Philadelphia head coach Doug Pederson said he envisions Hurts being used in a similar fashion to New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill:

“He has a unique skill set,” said Pederson, according to Dave Spadaro of the Eagles' team website. “You see what Taysom Hill has done in New Orleans. It’s something we’re going to explore.”

Hill has been sort of a Swiss army knife for the Saints, being used as a ball-carrier, a receiver and a returner. So basically, he does everything except play quarterback (he has thrown just 13 passes since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2017). That being said, New Orleans does seem to view Hill as a prime candidate to replace Drew Brees moving forward.

Given that Carson Wentz is currently the starting quarterback in Philly, it's hard to imagine Hurts ever taking on a full-time role under center any time in the near future, but given that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said he wants the franchise to be a “quarterback factory” (whatever that means), perhaps Philadelphia does see potential in Hurts as a passer.

This past season, Hurts threw for 3,851 yards, 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 69.7 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 191.2. He also rushed for 1,298 yards and 20 scores.
