Philadelphia Eagles backup tight end Trey Burton will forever be remembered for his role in one of the most memorable plays in Super Bowl history. He threw Nick Foles the touchdown in the famous “Philly Special” play. However, it all could’ve been so different had he held on to the ball like he was actually designed to do.

Burton reveals that passing to Foles wasn’t the first, second, or even third option on that play. It was all the way down in fourth.

It took some serious stones for Burton to trust his passing skills enough that he would even consider picking that option to pass during a crucial goal-line play in the Super Bowl. Had he messed up that throw, the Eagles wouldn’t have scored that touchdown and entered halftime with all the momentum, not to mention a 10-point lead. He also might have gotten an earful from Eagles coaches for not picking options one through three.

But Burton simply did what basically the entire Eagles team did all game long. They played without fear, but instead came out with aggressiveness and utmost confidence in their abilities. It paid off with that incredibly gutsy play on fourth down and eventually led to their first championship in franchise history.

Maybe Burton would’ve scored anyway had he chosen to run instead. But obviously, it wouldn’t have been nearly as memorable as throwing a touchdown pass to his quarterback and instantly being immortalized in Super Bowl lore because of that very special play.
