Eric Clapton was born in Ripley, Surrey, England. He attended St. Bede’s Secondary Modern School before transferring to Hollyfield Road School. Around the age of 13, Clapton received his first ever acoustic guitar. Although it was difficult to play, Clapton didn’t give up. Three years later, Clapton studied college and took up stained-glass design at Kingston Art School. However, Clapton was kicked out a year later for insufficient progress in his studies.
For the most part, Clapton didn’t focus on his studies as he spent more time on music. After getting kicked out of college, Clapton started his music career by busking around Richmond and Kingston. While doing so, Clapton also worked as a laborer in construction sites alongside his grandfather.

While Clapton stayed with the band for 18 months, he would eventually leave on the day the band released their first hit album, For Your Love. This was due to the band’s shift to pop music, while Clapton remained loyal to the blues.

While Clapton rose to stardom with John Mayall and the Bluebreakers, he eventually left the band and joined a new band, Creme. With Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce, Creme turned out to be a solid band. Clapton and Creme were able to release three albums that garnered attention worldwide, including Fresh Cream, Disraeli Gears, and Wheels of Fire.
Although Creme was doing relatively well, the band eventually disbanded in 1968. After Creme, Clapton would continue to join other bands that only lasted for a short period of time. Clapton formed the band, Blind Faith, which disbanded after one album in the span of only seven months. He also toured as a sideman with Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. Shortly after, Clapton also formed a band called Derek and the Dominos which released Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. The song Layla would become one of the greatest hits in the 1970s, as this eventually earned Clapton a Best Rock Song Award in 1993.
Although Derek and the Dominos were about to release a second album, the band eventually disbanded which forced Clapton to take a hiatus. However, Clapton reignited his music career after recording the album, 461 Ocean Boulevard. The album included a cover of Bob Marley’s I Shot the Sheriff, which was Clapton’s first number one hit.
