Eric Clapton was born in Ripley, Surrey, England. He attended St. Bede’s Secondary Modern School before transferring to Hollyfield Road School. Around the age of 13, Clapton received his first ever acoustic guitar. Although it was difficult to play, Clapton didn’t give up. Three years later, Clapton studied college and took up stained-glass design at Kingston Art School. However, Clapton was kicked out a year later for insufficient progress in his studies.

For the most part, Clapton didn’t focus on his studies as he spent more time on music. After getting kicked out of college, Clapton started his music career by busking around Richmond and Kingston. While doing so, Clapton also worked as a laborer in construction sites alongside his grandfather.

In 1963, when he was 17, Clapton joined his first band called The Roosters. The band, however, was short-lived as it only lasted until August of the same year. Nevertheless, this didn’t end Clapton’s music career. He agreed to play guitar for the band, Casey Jones and The Engineers which saw him take part in seven gigs

Shortly after, Clapton was recruited to join The Yardbirds. With The Yardbirds, he recorded his first albums. These include Five Live Yardbirds and Sonny Boy Williamson and The Yardbirds. While Clapton stayed with the band for 18 months, he would eventually leave on the day the band released their first hit album, For Your Love. This was due to the band’s shift to pop music, while Clapton remained loyal to the blues.

After leaving the Yardbirds, Clapton joined the band Bluesbreakers. Here, Clapton established himself as a guitarist in the music industry worldwide. After releasing the album, Blues Breakers, he was declared by the public as a god in graffiti with the phrase “Clapton is God”.

While Clapton rose to stardom with John Mayall and the Bluebreakers, he eventually left the band and joined a new band, Creme. With Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce, Creme turned out to be a solid band. Clapton and Creme were able to release three albums that garnered attention worldwide, including Fresh Cream, Disraeli Gears, and Wheels of Fire.

Although Creme was doing relatively well, the band eventually disbanded in 1968. After Creme, Clapton would continue to join other bands that only lasted for a short period of time. Clapton formed the band, Blind Faith, which disbanded after one album in the span of only seven months. He also toured as a sideman with Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. Shortly after, Clapton also formed a band called Derek and the Dominos which released Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. The song Layla would become one of the greatest hits in the 1970s, as this eventually earned Clapton a Best Rock Song Award in 1993.

Although Derek and the Dominos were about to release a second album, the band eventually disbanded which forced Clapton to take a hiatus. However, Clapton reignited his music career after recording the album, 461 Ocean Boulevard. The album included a cover of Bob Marley’s I Shot the Sheriff, which was Clapton’s first number one hit. This would, clearly, help to add to Eric Clapton's net worth in 2022.

After 461 Ocean Boulevard, Clapton started to compose film scores. He wrote the song, Edge of Darkness for the film’s soundtrack which earned him a BAFTA Award in 1985. While this was successful for Clapton, his golden year came in 1992. Clapton released the album, Unplugged, which included the hit song Tears in Heaven. In the following year, Clapton was awarded three Grammys for Tears in Heaven including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Male Pop Vocal Performance. On the other hand, the Unplugged album earned Clapton won Album of the Year and Best Rock Vocal Performance. On top of that, the album is considered to be Clapton’s best selling album with at least 26 million copies sold worldwide including 10 million in the United States alone.

Clapton has earned a huge amount of money as a musician. In fact, his hit songs such as Layla, Wonderful Tonight, and Tears in Heaven have accumulated a turnover of £13.6 million which is around $17 million. Of the turnover, Clapton received £7.3 million or $9.1 million. Aside from earning huge money, Clapton was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thrice. His first two with bands such as Yardbirds and Cream, and the last one as a solo artist in 2000.

Due to his influence in music, countries have recognized his brilliance. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1995. But later on, Clapton would be promoted to Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Aside from the British Empire, France also awarded Clapton as the Commandeur of the country’s Order of Arts and Letters

In the 2000’s Clapton continued to be active in music. He collaborated with B.B. King to produce the Grammy winning album, Riding with the King. In 2005, the rights to Clapton’s memoirs were sold at the Frankfurt Book Fair for $4 million

In the 2010s, Clapton continued to engage in concerts across the United States and Europe. He earned £11.7 million or $14.7 million in terms of salary for 2009 and $4.9 million a year later. Clapton also released solo studio albums such as Old Sock, I Still Do, and Happy Xmas, which was a tribute to the late DJ, Avicii.
