Fantasy baseball managers who spent a valuable draft pick on New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom were disappointed when the two-time Cy Young award winner landed on the 60-day injured list with a stress reaction in his right scapula. deGrom's managers were probably fearing the worst in the 2022 MLB season after the 33-year-old made just 12 starts last year due to various stints on the injured list. However, the Mets provided an encouraging update on the ace right-hander on Tuesday, as reported by MLB.com.

deGrom underwent another set of imaging tests on Monday, which revealed “continued healing in the scapula,” according to a team release the following day. The release also stated that deGrom “will continue to build distance and velocity in his throwing program,” but there was no word as to when he might be able to throw off a mound — the next significant step in his rehab. He has been throwing off flat ground up to 75 feet, according to Hefner.

deGrom's latest MRI revealed “continued healing in the scapula.” The Mets plan to continue increasing the distance and velocity in his throwing program, which currently has him throwing off flat ground at 75 feet.

The next step will be for deGrom, who will likely require at least three to five rehab starts, to throw off of a mound. All told, the process will likely put a possible late-June or July return in play for the Mets' hurler.

Pitching coach Jeremy Hefner stated that the Mets are committed to playing “the long game” with deGrom, which certainly appears to be a difference in strategy from last season, when the star pitcher's returns from injury were immediately accompanied by trips back to the injured list.

That's certainly encouraging news for fantasy baseball managers, who likely drafted Jacob deGrom to be their ace in the 2022 MLB season.
