The first weekend of March Madness has come to an end, and we saw some memorable moments as well as a couple of unreal meltdowns. Nonetheless, the coaching search is ongoing for a number of programs, and the Georgetown Hoyas were one of the biggest. Patrick Ewing was fired after another disappointing season, and several names floated around. But, it looks like Providence head coach Ed Cooley is going to be the next man for the Hoyas, according to Jon Rothstein:
“Sources: Georgetown has hired Providence's Ed Cooley as its next head coach.”
This is where things had been trending, and after Providence lost in the Round of 64 to Kentucky, conversations kicked up even more. Jeff Goodman of Stadium added more context to Ed Cooley heading to Georgetown:
“Ed Cooley is on verge of leaving Providence to take the Georgetown job barring a last-minute change of heart, source close to the situation told @stadium. No deal has been signed yet, but trending heavily in that direction.”
Georgetown drastically needed a change after going 7-25 and just 2-18 in Big East play, and Ewing finished with a 75-109 record and a 28-81 record in the Big East. The Hoyas never went over .500 in Big East play with Ewing, and they made the NCAA Tournament just once, losing in the Round of 64 to Colorado despite winning the Big East Conference Tournament.
Ed Cooley's Time At Providence
Ed Cooley stays in the Big East and moves from Providence to Georgetown if everything is finalized as expected, and this is a big jump for Cooley. Cooley posted a 334-222 record in 12 years at Providence, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances and a run to the Sweet 16 a season ago, not to mention seven 20-plus win seasons.
With Georgetown's recent struggles and tremendous legacy in the program, Ed Cooley will be expected to change this program in a huge way.
