Well, this is bound to upset some fans of the New York Giants. They've made a lot of moves recently – moves that would suggest they're trying to cut costs on the roster. One move they didn't make was getting Eli Manning off the books in any way.

Now, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is reporting that Eli Manning will be receiving a $5 million roster bonus on March 17.

Manning is one of the priciest players on the New York Giants roster. Despite that, there were very few rumors about him not being on the roster next season. Now that seems like a certainty as they'll be paying his roster bonus soon.

What's more baffling is that New York has made other moves (Olivier Vernon and Odell Beckham Jr. for example) that do help with cap space. However, they made no such move with Manning.

Of course, trading him wouldn't have been nearly as easy as trading those two, but there were plenty of ways they could've relieved some of the money.

Manning very well could be a Hall of Fame quarterback, but is clearly on the downswing of his career.

At this point, it seems clear that the Giants won't go very far as long as the 38-year-old is their quarterback. However, as odd as it sounds, this could be a move with eyes towards the future.

Keeping the expensive slinger and acquiring a young quarterback to learn under him could be the right move here. It might not end well record-wise for the Giants in 2019, but it will give the young quarterback a chance to get acclimated to the team (and possibly the NFL if through the draft).

Then, once Manning is gone, the Giants will have their quarterback of the future ready to go after learning under a potential Hall of Famer for a season.
