New York Giants running back Jonathan Stewart could still get back on the field this season. Stewart has been recently placed on the injured reserve by the Giants due to a foot injury, which means that he’ll be ineligible to see action for at least eight weeks.

NFL teams are only allowed to bring back up to two players from the injured reserve each season, but it seems that the Giants will reserve one of those slots for Jonathan Stewart, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN.

Pat Shurmur said RB Jonathan Stewart has an 8-week foot injury. There is “potential to bring him back” from injured reserve.

Stewart was signed by the Giants to a two-year deal back in March to provide depth at their running back position and veteran presence in the locker room. Before he was designated to the injured reserve list, Stewart was acting as rookie sensation Saquon Barkley. He’s only appeared in three games so far this season and produced just 17 rushing yards on six carries.

Selected by the Carolina Panthers in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Jonathan Stewart played all of his first 10 seasons in the league in Carolina. He was released by the Panthers back in February to create extra financial leg room.
