The New York Giants made their first trade with the New York Jets in both franchise history for Leonard Williams. Williams will make his debut for the Giants Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys. But it appears the Giants are looking to extend the defensive lineman in the next few weeks.

The Giants would like to re-sign Williams, whose contract expires after this season, and are planning to open contract talks with him before Thanksgiving, sources tell ESPN.

The Giants traded for Williams with the idea to re-sign him, and even included a clause that turned the fifth-round pick they sent to the Jets into a fourth-rounder if they can consummate an extension with Williams before the league year begins in March.

“We gave up a three and a five,” Gettleman said. “Our goal is to sign him long-term. He's only 25 years old. And obviously talented. He's a piece you can build around.”

The Giants are in a successful rebuilding stage and adding Williams is a big step in order to ensure a successful plan for the future.

Williams has not missed a game in the last four seasons. As a sixth overall pick in the 2015 draft, he hasn't been bad. But he hasn't been the constant disruption that the Jets envisioned, either. He's only registered 17 sacks in his career. And within the last 18 games, only two sacks to his name.

Maybe changing from the Jets to the Giants on the front of his jersey will give Williams the boost he needs to live up to the hype.
