Ja Morant was selected second overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, and the young point guard is aware that the Memphis Grizzlies have high expectation on him.

Morant is expected to start at point guard for the Grizzlies in the 2019-20 NBA season after they traded veteran playmaker Mike Conley. Conley was sent to the Utah Jazz that signaled a changing of the guard in Memphis. Morant will take his spot, and the 19-year-old rookie knows that he has a huge hole to fill in Memphis.

“Mike Conley is a great player,” Morant said via Omari Sanfoka II of The Athletic. “I have big shoes to fill, and I wish him the best.”

Morant was an unranked player in high school and did not make a lot of noise during his rookie season with Murray State. However, the South Carolina native started boosting his draft stock in his sophomore year. In 33 games, he averaged 24.5 points and 10.0 assists on top of 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game.

The Grizzlies are now on a full rebuilding mode after parting ways with Conley, who spent all of his 12 seasons in Memphis. Last season, Memphis also traded starting center Marc Gasol to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Jonas Valanciunas.
