The Hampton Pirates easily dispatch of the Virginia University of Lynchburg Dragons with a dominant 121-66 victory. Having won just one of their last five games, the Pirates were eager to notch another tally in the ‘W' column. This is their second time scoring over 100 points this season – they previously put up 109 against Mid-Atlantic Christian.

Originally, Hampton wasn't even supposed to play Virginia Lynchburg. They were scheduled to tip off against the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks, but the game was postponed. Hampton rescheduled a match against the Dragons just a few days prior.

Hampton head coach Buck Joyner must have emphasized the importance of transition, because the Pirates spent the entire game running. Not only on turnovers, but on missed shots and rebounds, the Pirates ran the floor. Even in the half court, Hampton got whatever they wanted. Point guard Tristen Maxwell had his best game of the season. He almost toyed with the Dragon defense, making them look silly on step back three-pointers or by finding open teammates for easy looks.

However, Virginia Lynchburg hung around for the first few minutes of the opening half. Though their offense had trouble getting any rhythm, Hampton kept sending them to the free throw line for easy points. Once Hampton stopped fouling, however, the Dragon offense quickly screeched to a halt.

In total, Virginia Lynchburg turned the ball over 16 times. 10 of those 16 turnovers were steals from the Pirates. In both halves Hampton had five dunks. The Dragons simply could not keep up with their opponent's defensive activity nor their speed and decisiveness in transition.

Hampton got another boon in the form of three-point shooting. They made 11 of 21 shots from deep, while the Dragons made just four of 19 three-point attempts. The threes helped Hampton extend their lead throughout the game. With eight minutes to go in the first half, Hampton led 37-25 – a controlling lead, but Virginia Lynchburg had a chance to come back. Going into the half, the Pirates widened the gap with a 53-37 advantage.

All hell broke loose for the Dragons in the second half. Maxwell continued to dominate as the Pirates went on to outscore Virginia Lynchburg 35-17 in the first 10 minutes of the second half. On a particular series of plays Maxwell threw two back-to-back alley-oops, and then threw another one just a couple minutes later. Hampton's transition offense was so unstoppable that the Dragons kept all their players back on a free throw. Instead of crashing the offensive glass as one of their players took the shots, their entire team set up the defense on the other end of the court. Even as Hampton put in their deep bench players, they continued to pour in baskets on the Dragons' heads.

Virginia Lynchburg guard Jahmir Brown led all players in scoring with 24 points. Marcus Brown was the only other Dragon in double figures with 10 points, as well as five rebounds.

On the other side, seven Hampton Pirates ended with double-digit scoring figures. Tristen Maxwell had his first triple-double of the year, scoring 20 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing 11 assists, many of which were alley-oops. He also made all four of his free throws and made four of his seven three-pointers. Tedrick Wilcox had a rough time with his efficiency (5-17 shooting) but he still had 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. He also had a thundering slam dunk in the second half that personified Hampton's dominance over Virginia Lynchburg. Jerry Deng put up 19 points and grabbed five rebounds, including three offensive boards. The Pirates controlled the offensive glass as well, grabbing 21 offensive rebounds compared to Virginia Lynchburg's nine.

Freshman Donovan Raymond had a good outing as well, scoring 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds. The Pirates also got double-digit scoring contributions from Ja'Von Benson (12), Amir Nesbitt (11), and Dan Banister Jr. (10).

With the victory, Hampton improves to 3-5 this season. CAA conference games have yet to take place, but the Pirates are currently tied with Campbell and Towson, who are also both 3-5. UNC Wilmington leads the conference with a 6-2 record, while Hofstra (5-2), Delaware (5-3), and Elon (5-3) are lurking close behind. North Carolina A&T, the only other HBCU in the CAA, has yet to win a game.

They matchup next against the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels on Dec. 11. The Fighting Squirrels are coming off a close 64-61 loss against Christopher Newport. They have since lost their last three games and are currently 2-4 this season.
