Add the Atlanta Hawks to the official list of teams currently looking for a new head coach. This is after a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN on Wednesday that the Hawks and Mike Budenholzer have both agreed to go their separate ways.
The Atlanta Hawks and coach Mike Budenholzer have mutually agreed to part ways, league sources told ESPN.
This is hardly a surprise for Hawks fans and NBA observers, as Budenholzer has been linked to at least a couple of teams who are surveying the field for a possible new head coach. It was earlier reported the New York Knicks were going to interview Budenholzer, while the Phoenix Suns had the former Hawks mentor on its list of coaching candidates before his withdrawal from Suns coaching consideration.
It makes sense for Budenholzer to attract plenty of attention from teams looking to make a leadership change. Although the Hawks were among the worst teams this season, their poor performance had a lot to do with the rebuilding phase the franchise is going through.
Budenholzer led the Hawks to the playoffs in four of his five seasons calling the shots for the team, a span that includes Atlanta’s 2014-15 run that saw it reach the Eastern Conference Finals.
Throughout his stint as the Hawks’ head coach, Budenholzer collected a 213-197 record in the regular season. The Hawks also went 17-22 in the playoffs under him.
Before coaching the Hawks, the 48-year-old Budenholzer spent 17 seasons from 1996 to 2013 as a San Antonio Spurs assistant coach.
