This season has been a difficult one for both the Atlanta Hawks and their fans. Even before opening day, the Hawks were not expected to achieve much success. It’s tough to watch Hawks games because not many people follow NBA teams to watch mediocrity unfold on an almost nightly basis. Having said all of that, the Hawks do have exciting guard Dennis Schroder, who has been trying all season long to alleviate the agony of the team’s fateful.

On Tuesday night, Schroder put up a scintillating performance Hawks fans have not seen in quite a while. When Dennis Schroder dropped 41 points on the Utah Jazz in a 99-94 road win, he became the first Hawks player to score at least 40 points since Joe Johnson did it over eight years ago, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Dennis Schröder is the first Hawks player to score 40 points since Joe Johnson on Dec. 19, 2009. That was the longest active drought without a 40-point scorer in the NBA.

Schroder exploding for over 40 points also came as a surprise as he racked up all those buckets opposite the Jazz’s stout defense.

Utah is second in the league in scoring defense with only 99.8 points allowed, and while the Jazz were able to keep Atlanta within the vicinity of that average, they could not find an answer to Schroder, who went 16-of-28 from the field. Schroder did not go crazy from behind the arc with only three three-pointers and also made just six of his 10 free throw attempts, suggesting that the Jazz simply could not keep in step with the 24-year-old guard.

Schroder is averaging 19.5 points per game this season, and he will be leading the Hawks again this Thursday in a road game against the Sacramento Kings.
