The comparisons between Trae Young and Luka Doncic will probably never end, which is sort of understandable considering the career narrative of both studs. Young recently opened up about the media relentlessly trying to find parallelisms between his career and that of Doncic, and the Atlanta Hawks star had a brutally honest message.

In a recent appearance on HBO and Uninterrupted's The Shop, Trae Young explained exactly why he's not buying in on the Luka comparisons:

“Not as much as people want it to be,” Young responded when asked if he sees Doncic's career trajectory as motivation. “People want it to be me versus him. Me personally I'm competing with Allen Iverson. I'm competing with Steve Nash and Chris Paul. My mindset is not Luka.”

Fair point from the Hawks point guard here. There's no denying that Luka Doncic is one of the brightest stars in the NBA today, but for Young, he would much rather focus on other all-time greats — a status that he also hopes to achieve in his career:

“I wanna be an all-time great in this game and I wanna be someone that's looked at as an idol and someone who can be a good role model<” Young said. “So that's my main job. Everybody else wants to do all the comparison stuff, that ain't for me.”

Regardless of what the Hawks star says, however, the comparisons will always be there. These two literally swapped places on Draft Day, and their careers will forever run parallel to each other — whether they like it or not.

For Trae Young, however, the Hawks All-Star continues to set his sights beyond what's in his close proximity:

“I want to be in that category,” Young added. “I'm not there yet and I got a long way to go but that's the mentality I have. I'm trying to chase those guys.”

There is also little doubt that Young will reach the same heights as the likes of Allen Iverson, Steve Nash, and Chris Paul. Although, the same can be said about Luka Doncic as well.
