It's always interesting watching NBA superstars transition into a different role as they age. Some have a hard time taking on a lesser role, while others transform their game to adapt to their new reality. Vince Carter personifies the latter.

Carter appeared in eight straight All-Star Games at one point in his career, but now he's a serviceable role player bringing veteran leadership in his 21st year in the league. Although Carter is in the twilight of his career, he's not looking to chase rings at this point.

According to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, Carter had this to say about the practice of ring chasing:

“I don’t have any problem with how it’s done now. But that’s not for me.”

It's difficult to decipher exactly what Carter means here. Clearly, the former All-Star has no problem taking on a lesser role for the greater good of the team. Why wouldn't he want to do that for a team like the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, or another contender?

Perhaps it's because the fans on the media project their “all or nothing” mentality on the players when that's not the way they view the league. Obviously, every player wants to win an NBA title during their career. But maybe Carter places a higher value on where he fits and will feel comfortable, rather than trying to latch onto a team seeking a title.

Additionally, when Carter was a superstar in the league, a player like Kevin Durant jumping ship for a hated rival would be unfathomable. Perhaps Carter doesn't want to be remembered as a guy that finally won a ring because of the people around him more than anything else.
