You can’t project the trajectory of a player’s career in the NBA based on two shots in some Summer League game. That said, it certainly does not look good, especially for a player like Hawks rookie Trae Young, who is being hyped as the second coming of Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, if he airballs both of those attempts.

That’s exactly what Atlanta Haws rookie Trae Young experienced in his first Summer League, as he completely missed the rim in his first two 3-point attempts of the game against the Memphis Grizzlies.

In the first attempt, Young elected to pull up for a 3-pointer instead of passing the ball on his rolling teammate, a decision that he wishes he could take back. In his second long-ball attempt, Young tried to show his limitless range just as advertised prior to the NBA Draft but also failed spectacularly as the ball touched nothing but air before bouncing out of bounds.

Young was drummed up prior to the draft as the best shooting prospect among all rookie aspirants. After all, he led the nation in scoring during his first and only season with the Oklahoma Sooners, averaging 27.4 points per game on 42.2 percent shooting from the field.

Efficiency on offense is something he has to work on in order to pan out in the NBA. He had a decent 36.0 shooting percentage from behind the arc back in college, but there’s always room for improvement, both in terms of accuracy and shot selection.

The Hawks could just hope that those airballs are mere anomalies and not a start of a trend for Young.
