The Miami Heat chanced upon two of the most promising prospects of the recent draft in the form of the undrafted 6-foot-2 shooting guard Kendrick Nunn and 6-foot-5 guard Tyler Herro, who Miami selected with the 13th overall pick. Both Nunn and Herro have had tremendous starts to their respective NBA careers, which absolutely bodes well for the future of the Heat franchise. For Miami longtime servant Udonis Haslem, the 39-year-old veteran believes that both guys have what it takes to succeed in the league.
“We have a lot of guys that have a chip on their shoulder, something to prove, so naturally it’s in a lot of these guys’ DNA,” Haslem said, via Andre Fernandez and Manny Navarro of The Athletic. “You know me. I always keep a chip on my shoulder, and if I don’t have one, I create one or I find one. These guys don’t need me to do that for them. They’re built like that.”
Haslem pretty much implied that he sees himself in these young studs, which from his perspective, is definitely a high compliment.
Nunn surely has a lot more to prove, given the fact that he went undrafted last June. Currently, the former Illinois standout is averaging 15.3 points (on 44.1 percent shooting), 2.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals, while also knocking down 2.1 3-pointers per ballgame. At this point, the 24-year-old appears to have a firm grip on Miami's starting shooting guard spot.
Backing him up is Kentucky alum Tyler Herro, who himself was overlooked by 12 other teams before the Heat decided to pluck him out of the board at 13th overall. The 19-year-old has been a steady force coming off of the Miami bench, and is currently putting up 13.6 points (on 43.9 percent from the field), 3.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 0.67 steals, including 2.0 3-pointers per contest on a 39.2-percent clip.
The Heat are currently occupying the third spot in the East, and it is without question that both Nunn and Herro have played a pivotal role in the team's success early on.
