Heroes of Newerth ceased operations on June 20, 2022, more than twelve years since its launch in May 2010.

Heroes of Newerth – also known as HoN for short – will finally end its online service on June 20, 2022. News about HoN's shutdown came late last year when the devs Frostburn Studios announced its plans to retire the game. The news came as a shock to its player base, but to many others looking in from the outside, it was the inevitable finally happening.

Heroes of Newerth started out as a contender against Riot Games' League of Legends and Valve's Dota 2 in the then-emerging Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre. HoN started out strong with a competitive player base and strong community support, but it quickly got left behind by Dota 2 and League of Legends – primarily due to Valve's and Riot's stronger marketing and deeper pockets that allowed the two developers to finance large tournaments. HoN professional players eventually moved on from the game to greener pastures, and soon the player base started to follow. Not much later, mobile MOBAs also became more popular, which completely drained HoN's final hopes of a revival.

Fans who wish to bid a final farewell to the game might no longer be able to do so at the moment of this writing. Returning players will no longer be able to create new accounts – so unless they have access to their old accounts, they might really have no more chances of playing the game one last time.

It also doesn't appear like there are many who would wish to do so anymore. After more than twelve years of service, the game will die with a whimper, with nary a single community movement asking for a new lease of life for the game. Instead, it looks like the once proud Heroes of Newerth will be quickly forgotten.
