The Charlotte Hornets topped the Washington Wizards by a score of 116-110 on Friday night in a battle of teams chasing the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Following the win, Hornets star Kemba Walker said the performance was an example of how much the team cares.

“Just loved the way we came out and competed from the very beginning of the game,” Walker said, according to The Associated Press. “We established ourselves really early on both ends of the floor. That was a big win. We showed some resiliency (and) showed how much we cared about our season.”

Walker finished with 28 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals over 36 minutes in the victory, going 11-of-30 from the floor and 3-of-8 from three-point range.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 31-37 and moved to within one game of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, with the Miami Heat holding on with a record of 32-36.

Charlotte was 26-26 back on Feb. 2, but since then, the team has gone just 5-11.

The Hornets will have a key showdown with the Heat in South Beach on Sunday afternoon and then will head back home for a three-game home-stand in which they will play host to the Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston Celtics.

Charlotte has made just three playoff appearances since 2005, last making the postseason during the 2015-16 campaign when it won 48 games and ultimately fell to Miami in the first round.

The Hornets have not actually won a playoff series since 2002.
