After another deflating loss for the Miami Hurricanes, this time to the Virginia Cavaliers, the seat seems hotter than ever for head coach Manny Diaz.

Miami was trailing 30-28 late and pieced together a drive to get into field range. It became apparent they were content with attempting a game-winning kick instead of trying to hammer in a touchdown. When that field goal attempt echoed off the uprights as time expired, Hurricanes fans were left watching Virginia celebrate.

Per 247sports, Diaz claimed afterwards that Miami was indeed trying to score the touchdown, even though it didn't look like it.

“We were trying to score. We had gashed them on the run from the 50-yard line in. We thought they were pretty whipped up front. They had been subbing and losing guys and we simply didn’t gain yards on first and second down. Once it became 3rd and 10 and the way the clock was – they took a timeout late in the play clock and at that point we could kick the walk-off field goal. We were trying to score a touchdown until it got to third down.”

While it was just a 33-yard attempt and the expectation is for the kicker to make it, in college all bets are off when it comes to kicking. The sure thing for Miami would've been to go for six, which Diaz insists they were trying to do.
