With the long-awaited release of Pixar's Inside Out 2 coming, it's time to look back at the first film. After all, it's been nearly a decade since the first film came out.

What's Inside Out about?

Inside Out follows a young girl, Riley (Kaitlyn Dias), whose world is turned upside down when her family moves. Her father (Kyle MacLachlan) is facing a lot of pressure with the move as it's implied he relocated his family for his job.

Back home, Riley had friends, liked her school, and was on the hockey team. Moving to San Fransisco means that Riley has to start from the ground floor.

And it's a rough adjustment. Her classmates laugh at her and she is met with new, negative emotions. Inside her mind, Riley's emotions, led by Joy (Amy Poehler), are facing their own troubles.

After losing some of the core memories, Joy and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) have to rescue them.  They travel the inner workings of her mind to retrieve the core memories before Riley loses the islands inside of her mind.

Meanwhile, Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Anger (Tony Hale), and Fear (Bill Hader) are in Headquarters trying to navigate Riley's tumultuous times.

How does it end?

Joy is separated from Sadness but reunites with her thanks to Bing Bong's (Richard Kind) sacrifice. She realizes that Riley needs Sadness instead of pushing that emotion away.

In the real world, Riley, who is depressed, decides to buy a bus ticket back to Minnesota. She gets so far as boarding the bus and letting it pull out of the station.

Upon Joy and Sadness working together, Riley has an epiphany. Together, they create a new core memory and island that represents Riley accepting her family's move.

She then gets off the bus and reunites with her family. Inside Out ends with Riley on the school's hockey team, meeting a boy, and having made friends.

Back inside her mind, the emotions realize that they need to all work in conjunction as Riley gets older.

Was Inside Out a hit?

Pete Docter directed Inside Out based on a script he co-wrote with Meg LeFauve and Josh Cooley. It was a big hit at the box office. Additionally, it is one of Pixar's highest-grossing films ever.

After premiering at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, Pixar and Disney released the film publicly one month later in June 2015. During its theatrical run, the film made over $850 million.

That makes it the sixth highest-grossing film (worldwide) of all time for Pixar. Domestically, its $356 million haul is enough to put it in the fifth spot.

In the sequel, the emotions are back. Riley is now heading into her teenage years. And with that transition comes new emotions. These include Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser).

Per Pixar, the official synopsis of the film reads: “Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.”

Kelsey Mann directed the film in her feature film directorial debut. Meg LaFauve returned to co-write the script. This time, she co-wrote it with Dave Holstein.

Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Diane Lane, and Kyle MacLachlan reprise their roles in the sequel. However, Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader both exited the project. In their places are Liza Lapira and Tony Hale, respectively.

Inside Out 2 will be released on June 14.
