Utah Jazz All-Star center Rudy Gobert has agreed to a five-year, $205 million extension with the club, according to ESPN's Tim MacMahon. The deal has a player option on the fifth year, and it's the largest contract for a center in NBA history.

Gobert had this to say about the agreement:

“It means that they believe in me,” Gobert told ESPN. “They believe in what we've been building over the years with this whole organization, with coach [Quin Snyder] and all the guys. For me, it's an incredible blessing. It's a very motivating feeling to know that we all share the same vision and we all share this goal for this state and for this franchise.”

There were rumors earlier in the week that Gobert was looking for a supermax deal similar to Giannis Antetokounmpo ($228 million), but he claims he never asked for that much while also explaining why he went this route:

“For me, my goal is to always win a championship,” said Rudy Gobert. “When we spoke with my agent before the negotiations started, I decided that I didn't want to ask for the supermax. We didn't want to start the negotiations by asking for the supermax. For me, it was important to show to the organization and show to the team that it wasn't about money. It was about continuing to build what we've been building and also give this team and give myself the stability and the peace of mind to not have to deal with the negotiations later.

“I want to win, and I feel like leaving this money on the table for the team just to be able to have better talent around me and Donovan was really important. I want to win, and I believe in this group and I believe in this organization, and I was willing to leave that money on the table for them.”

This Rudy Gobert extension comes not long after fellow Jazz star Donovan Mitchell signed a five-year max extension. Utah has now locked up its two All-Stars for the foreseeable future.

This is especially notable given Gobert and Mitchell went through some trials and tribulations this past season after they were the first two NBA players to test positive for COVID-19. There was evidence of a beef between the two, but they have since worked things out and are set to star together in Utah for a long time.

The Jazz will be looking to take a step forward in 2020-21 after losing in the first round of the 2020 playoffs. Utah held a 3-1 lead over the Denver Nuggets, only to lose the next three games despite Mitchell's monumental efforts.

Rudy Gobert holds career averages of 11.7 points, 11.0 rebounds an 2.2 blocks in seven seasons in Utah. He has won Defensive Player of the Year twice (2018, 2019) and made his first All-Star Game in 2020.
