For much of the preseason, there has been a cloud of certainty around the New York Jets' quarterback situation.

With that in mind, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com is reporting that the Jets have named Josh McCown as the starter for the season opener against the Buffalo Bills on September 10th.

During that announcement, Bowles also stated that McCown gives the Jets the best chance to win, despite playing in just one series in the preseason. The 38-year-old will mark the fourth different starter in the last six seasons for New York.

McCown signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Jets over the offseason and beat out his competition in Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty, who will both foreseeably vie for the backup gig. If anything, the fact that he was able to come and earn the starting job over a pair of quarterbacks each well over a decade younger than him speaks to how dire the situation in New York has become.

It has been a hit-and-miss process for the organization at the quarterback position over the last several years, with no long-term solution truly manifesting itself over that span. McCown is set to enter his 15th season in the league with the Jets, marking his seventh stop along the way. He spent the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
