The New York Jets have been the worst team in the NFL this season, and they've been historically bad in the process. The Jets are now one of the earliest teams to be eliminated from playoff contention in NFL history.
With a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, New York fell to 0-10 on the season. Heading into Sunday's game, the Jets would have remained mathematically alive for the postseason if they won or the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins both lost.
However, the Colts defeated the Green Bay Packers, making the Jets the first team to be eliminated from the playoffs this season. A season ago, the Cincinnati Bengals were eliminated from playoff contention after starting 0-10, making them the quickest team to be eliminated from the playoffs since 2002.
Altogether, since 1990, there have been only 13 teams eliminated from playoff contention with six games remaining. This time around, though, New York has done so under the new playoff format that now has seven teams from each conference in the postseason.
Given that, the Jets being eliminated makes them arguably the worst team we've seen since 1990. Due to the struggles of the team, Adam Gase is unlikely to be back with the organization next season.
At the same time, the Jets will probably have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, with a chance to select a new hopeful franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. With that being said, New York is creating history that may be tough to beat.
