With a revamped roster, by way of free agency and trade, to go along with a talented young core, the Jets have the potential to surprise some people in 2019.

The team focused heavily on surrounding second-year quarterback Sam Darnold on every level, adding RB Le’Veon Bell, LG Kelechi Osemele and WR Jamison Crowder within the first 12 hours of free agency.

Along with those flashy offensive additions, though, it has been an unheralded defensive player that could help ignite the other side of the ball.

Fourth-year linebacker Jordan Jenkins has been impressive so far during offseason workouts.

As soon as the Jets drafted Jenkins in 2016, he slid into the Calvin Pace role. Mainly an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme tasked with setting the edge and shutting down the run.He did the dirty work, allowing others the freedom to run around and make plays.

Last season Jenkins tallied seven sacks, displaying potential as a pass rusher he hadn't beforehand. The former Georgia Bulldog seems well on his way to repeating, or improving on, that performance this season.

Connor Hughes of The Athletic described Jenkins' performance so far:

This offseason, he divvied up his time. He spent two or three weeks working with a footwork specialist in Houston, then another two or three weeks in Atlanta with pass-rushing guru Chuck Smith. Combine that with Gregg Williams’ attack-first, think-later defensive scheme and a contract year and the stage is set.

Added outside linebackers coach Joe Vitt:

“He’s more of an athletic guy than I originally thought. I suspect and anticipate him having a big year.”
