Despite winning their first game of the season, the San Francisco 49ers suffered a spate of injuries to several key players during their 31-13 victory over the New York Jets. As such, the team was critical of the playing field at the MetLife Stadium where the Week 2 match took place.

But while the NFL has said that both the league and the Jets approved the playing surface prior to the game between New York and San Francisco, the NFL Players Association will stand behind the 49ers’ cricitism of the field’s condition, sources told Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson. The union will also endorse an investigation on whether the field may have been improperly certified prior to the game.

During the game, the Niners lost defensive end Nick Bosa and defensive lineman Solomon Thomas due to torn ACLs while playing on the MetLife Stadium field. In addition, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo also suffered a high ankle sprain, while running backs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman also suffered knee injuries.

After the game, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and players such as defensive end Arik Armstead complained of the MetLife Stadium turf, with Shanahan stating that the number of knee and ankle injuries being “as many as he’s ever been a part of.”

A source from the NFLPA further told Robinson that the field’s condition was a concern for the union, and that the condition of the turf in playing fields will “continue to be a health and safety issue in general.”

Meanwhile, a San Francisco side missing several players returns at the MetLife Stadium against the New York Giants in their Week 3 match on Sunday.
