New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold missed Week 2 with mono; then it was rumored that he'd be out three to seven weeks, now, he's targeting a Week 5 return, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. Per Cimini, “he said the doctors are estimating that as a return.”

Darnold was diagnosed with mono before the Jets' Week 2 game against the Cleveland Browns, that turned to be a 23-3 drubbing as New York dealt with more injuries. He hasn't handled being out well, as his frustration and anger of watching rather than playing mounted when watching Monday night's game.

What made it worse for Darnold? His dad tried to convince him he's more frustrated than him.

Said Darnold on ESPN radio, via Matt Stypulkoski of NJ.com:

“I just watched it with my parents and my dad, thinking that sometimes he would be madder than me and he tried to convince me that he was more frustrated than I was. That’s when I really started getting mad.”

Darnold will have to be frustrated for a few more weeks. New York is essentially “quarantining” the second-year quarterback, as mono can be extremely contagious and contains symptoms including sore throat, fever, a loss of appetite, etc. It can also cause swollen organs, which could rupture if hit hard enough. It's safe to say the Jets don't want that in their locker room anytime soon.

Darnold's slated Week 5 return is undoubtedly positive. Luke Falk (after Trevor Siemien's season-ending injury on Monday) is the starter, and that may not cut it against a gauntlet of high-quality NFL teams that begins with the New England Patriots. Luckily, they have a Week 4 bye, which will prepare Darnold for his estimated Week 5 return, against the Philadelphia Eagles.
