The Kansas basketball team had to end a scrimmage early on Tuesday as Elmarko Jackson went down with an injury. The team was scrimmaging in front of campers, and Jayhawks head coach Bill Self decided to call it when Jackson went down. Originally, Self told the campers that Jackson was going to be fine, but it turned out to be worse than he originally thought. Kansas basketball announced on Twitter that Jackson has a torn patellar tendon.

“Yesterday, while working out in front of the campers, Elmarko Jackson tore his patellar tendon, an MRI conducted by Kansas team health confirmed last night,” Bill Self said in the statement. “It will requite surgery within the next several days and a full recovery is anticipated. Elmarko will be able to assume non-contact basketball duties in the next several months, but the full rehab process will take approximately 12 months. We are all crushed by this. Elmarko has had a terrific spring. He has worked so hard and improved so much. This will be a challenge that he will meet head on and he will return as good as ever.”

Elmarko Jackson played his first season with the Kansas basketball team last year. He averaged 17 minutes per game in 34 games, and he averaged 4.3 PPG. He also averaged 1.7 APG and 1.4 RPG.

Recovering from a torn patellar tendon is certainly going to take some time as the post noted that it will be about a year. Jackson will more than likely have to miss all of next season.

Jackson went down on a play where he was attacking the rim, and he was tended to by trainers for several minutes after he fell. Self told the campers that he was going to be fine, but it ended up being serious.

“Jackson went down hard to the ground after getting hit on his way to the rim,” A report from KUsports.com said. “The Jayhawks’ trainers took a look at him for several minutes, attending to his lower leg, before head coach Bill Self told the gathered crowd of campers, ‘Elmarko’s going to be fine,' said that Jackson’s affected area had been immobilized as a precautionary measure and then concluded the scrimmage.”

Obviously, Self didn't want the campers to worry about Jackson.

Hunter Dickinson will be back with the Kansas basketball team next season, and he saw Elmarko Jackson get injured during the scrimmage. He didn't get a great look at it, but he noted that Jackson was able to walk on his own after.

“I saw the fall, but I didn’t really see what happened because I was on the bench,” Hunter Dickinson said. “But it was good to see him being able to walk it off on his own … Hoping for the best, not sure, but we got a really good training staff that’ll get him back as soon as he can.”

Jackson will unfortunately have to miss a lot of time because of this injury, but his teammates and coaches have a lot of confidence that he will come back even stronger.
