Prior to the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns, Anthony Davis made some interesting comments. The former All-Star forward insinuated that Phoenix got lucky in last season's playoffs since he was injured, and if he was healthy they would've won that series. It was a controversial take that had people talking.

After the Lakers got blown out by the Suns, Devin Booker took the mic to address Anthony Davis' comments. Booker pointed out that there are a lot of what-ifs in the league's history, and said that Davis' comments were “funny.” He also made some interesting analogies along the way. (via Kellan Olson)

“If if was a fifth, we'd all be drunk. If my auntie had something between her legs, she'd be my uncle. There's a lot of if's in this game. And you look at history along the lines, there's something that comes up for every team during every season. Instead of just taking the high route and going, you have to make a comment like that.”

Weird analogies aside, Booker does make a great point. For every winner in the NBA, you can always point to what-if scenarios that influenced their win. The Lakers themselves deal with this what if all the time: fans always question their 2020 championship, asking what if that playoff series wasn't in the bubble. This is why the concept of asterisks when it comes to discussing rings is pointless: you can literally give an asterisk for any winner if you nitpick them.

Would the Lakers have won that series with Anthony Davis fully healthy? Perhaps, we may never know. However, if LA did win that series, they'd also be dealing with a “what if,” as Chris Paul was playing hobbled in that series. It's the reality of any sport: you will always have some circumstances that favor you when you win.

Davis pointing out the Lakers would've won if he was healthy would obviously be taken the wrong way by fans. Perhaps it would've been better if he didn't talk about this prior to the game. The Lakers losing by a lot against this same Suns team only adds to the irony of the situation.
