San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is a big believer of LeBron James' stature as one of the true all-time greats of the sport. On Thursday, the 71-year-old tactician bared his admiration for the Los Angeles Lakers star's impact outside the hardwood, particularly his bravery for taking a stand regarding social issues.

While we rarely hear Pop throw compliments about opposing players, he used the word “iconic” to describe the 4-time MVP's use of his massive platform and influence.

Here's what Pop told Lakers reporter Mike Trudell prior to tip-off of the Spurs' match against the Purple and Gold at Staples Center.

“I think he’s going to be an iconic figure … I’m so proud of this guy and so pleased for him … to see his development as a human being, as a citizen, as someone who looks at the social issues of our time and is willing to speak out.”

LeBron James recently issued a powerful statement in the wake of the shocking attack of Donald Trump supporters at the US Capitol in Washington, DC. The King has never been shy about voicing out his opinions when it comes to social injustice. In fact, the 4-time NBA champion has been lauded for refusing to just “shut up and dribble” and has urged his fellow professional athletes to use their platform for the greater good.

Pop and the Spurs, meanwhile, have figured in plenty of battles against James-led teams over the years. Still, they share a mutual respect for one another that stretches far beyond the basketball court. As far as Pop is concerned, LeBron James is one hell of a basketball player and an even better role model.
