Adding fuel to the fire for a possible Tinseltown reunion for former teammates LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, a recent piece by Joe Vardon of The Athletic sheds some light on Irving’s thoughts on the recent Lakers slump as well as how he feels about what James has been going through this season.

“I feel for him. I really do. I feel for him,” Irving said in Vardon’s story. “I’m very empathetic towards it because how much he wanted to play during that time when he messed up his groin.”

Indeed, LeBron’s groin injury, which was the most serious of his storied 16-year career, seemed to be the tipping point this season for the Lakers.

During his 17-game absence, the Lakers went 6-11 and the seeds of discontent were sown when Lakers President of Basketball Operations Magic Johnson and General Manager Rob Pelinka tried to trade each and every young player on the roster for Anthony Davis.

Irving is supportive of James due to the all the time he missed.

“You’re coming to a team like that and you have a lot of the responsibility, and you come back in the middle of the regular season, it’s hard because now other teams are gearing up for the playoffs, that next level of play,” Irving said in Vardon’s piece for The Athletic. “Bron knows about it, (Rajon) Rondo knows about it, but Kuz (Kyle Kuzma) and Brandon Ingram, he’s trying to teach these guys well about what it takes to win consistently in this league.”

The Lakers and Celtics face off tonight at 8:30 p.m. EST on ABC.
