The 2019-20 City Edition jerseys of the Los Angeles Lakers are inspired by none other than Shaquille O'Neal.

According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, the M.D.E. on the white vertical piping stands for “Most Dominant Ever.”

It's a proper shoutout for O'Neal — the other half of the dynamic Kobe-Shaq duo which won three straight titles for the Lakers in the 2000s. As they were creating their dynasty, it became clear that O'Neal was the most dominant big man that the NBA has ever seen.

Covering him one-on-one is a foolish idea. Even sending two or three defenders is laughable, as his brute strength enabled him to work his way all the way under the ring and slam it down.

A quick search of O'Neal's highlights would show tons of videos of him dunking over three to five guys at once. The most logical thing to do back then was to send him to the free-throw line. Thus, the term Hack-a-Shaq was invented. However, even this was a useless tactic as O'Neal drained the free throws in clutch situations.

Now, O'Neal is regarded as one of the best Lakers big men ever. He's right beside the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabar and Wilt Chamberlain. With that said, it only makes sense that the organization remembers him through its City Edition jerseys.
