LeBron James's impact on the court is well-documented, but it pales in comparison to the impact he has off the court. Following the opening of LeBron's I Promise School, First Lady Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama took to Twitter to praise James' charitable efforts.

James thanked First Lady Michelle for her kind words and concluded his tweet with the hashtag “I Promise.”

James has an excellent relationship with the Obama's so it's no surprise to see the superstar athlete and the former first family building each other up on social media. The mutual respect between them is quite evident.

Only cynical people can criticize Michelle Obama's tweet and LeBron James' subsequent response as a form of patting one's self on the back. This social media exchange is anything but that. Instead, this interaction only serves to amplify James' message.

Michelle Obama has more than 10 million Twitter followers and James has more than 41 million of his own. Although James' I Promise School has dominated the sports news cycle for the past 48 hours, it deserves all the attention in the world.

LeBron has consistently used his platform and voice to spread positive messages and give back to his community. The opening of his I Promise School is no different.

Perhaps James' message can inspire others to make a difference. Not just athletes, but regular folks as well. James has the platform and means to make huge contributions. But we all have the opportunity to help the less fortunate in our own communities in smaller, yet still meaningful ways.
