When you think about current records or streaks, you usually think about big-name players holding them. There are streaks for most games with double-digit scoring, consecutive games with at least one three or a free throw, etc. But before Thursday's 93-81 win over the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers forward Corey Brewer held the streak for most consecutive games played.

According to the OC Register, Brewer's streak was up to 317 games before Thursday. It marked the first time Brewer missed a game when healthy since Feb. 5, 2014. He played with the Minnesota Timberwolves then. The streak continued after Brewer was traded to the Houston Rockets and later to the Lakers.

Head coach Luke Walton was well aware of Brewer's ironman streak. Earlier this season, Walton approached Brewer asking the veteran if he wanted to keep the streak alive by any means. After the game Thursday, Walton recalled:

“Would he want me to throw him in some game with three seconds, call a timeout type of thing just to keep the streak alive?”

Brewer answered straight up:

“No, just coach the game. If I’m playing I’m playing, if I’m not I’m not.”

Walton did not talk to Brewer after the game, and expressed a desire to have given him some playing time. “Just the way the game was going … I do feel bad… That’s a cool streak to have.” The coach was also amazed at Brewer's durability:

“As hard as he plays in the game, he goes in practice that hard, every single day. I don’t know how that translates to never getting hurt because he literally throws his body around like a wild man.”

Brewer was not close to the all-time record, held by AC Green. He played in 1,192 straight games in a span of 16 years. The current streak-holder is now Denver Nuggets center Mason Plumlee, with 312 consecutive games played. Plumlee should keep that streak for some time, as he is a regular in the Nuggets coach Mike Malone's rotation.
